The powerhouses have lost face since the first edition of the Asian Cup

In short-term matches, even strong teams often fall victim to unexpected events. The Korean men's national soccer team, led by coach Jurgen Klinsmann, must also not let down its guard. In the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup, which opened on the 13th, a situation in which the Kanghongs lost face occurred from the first match of the group stage, creating tension in Korea.

China in Group A drew 0-0 with Tajikistan in the first match of Group A of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup group stage held at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar on the 13th (local time).

It was an embarrassing game for China. Tajikistan, ranked 106th in the FIFA rankings, was a representative 'football outskirt' of Asia, to the extent that this was its first Asian Cup final stage. It was a game that China, ranked 73rd in the FIFAI rankings, had to win, having advanced to the quarterfinals in the last tournament.

But when I opened the lid, I got the opposite result. On this day, China was pushed back in market share to 49%-51%, and nearly twice behind in the number of shots, at 10-20. China, who had been dragged throughout the game, scored a goal in the 36th minute of the second half with a header by Zhou Chen-je, but the match was canceled after a video review (VAR) ruled that China's Zhang Guangtai, who was in an offside position, interfered with Tajikistan's Bakhdat Hanonov's defense. According to soccer regulations, an offside foul is declared if a player in an offside position is involved in the ball being passed or touched by a teammate, interferes with an opponent's play, or takes advantage of the position. Unfortunately, China missed a goal and had to be satisfied with a draw until the end of the game.

There was an unexpected result in the first match of Group B between Uzbekistan and Syria. Naturally, the game where Uzbekistan was expected to win ended 0-0.

Unlike Uzbekistan, which unfortunately lost in a penalty shootout against Asia's representative powerhouse Australia in the round of 16 of the previous tournament, Syria has never passed the group stage in the past six Asian Cups.

Unlike the previous match between China and Tajikistan, Uzbekistan took the lead throughout this match. However, the game continued to be frustrating as they were unable to break through Syria's strong defense. Rather, it seemed like they were falling apart as they gave up a goal to Syria in the 32nd minute of the second half, but the offside flag was raised and they took a breather.

In addition, Australia, the strongest team in Group B, also won 2-0 against weak India, but it was a harder win than expected, finishing the first half 0-0.

The fact that the powerhouses struggled from the first game is expected to be a good lesson for Korea ahead of their first match in the group stage.
