The first 200-hit record holder released, is there a chance for his honor to be restored?

Even after reuniting with his teacher, there was no rebound in the end. Will Seo Geon-chang (34), who is now ‘free’, have a chance to bounce back?

On the 25th, the deadline for submission of pending players, LG announced 12 players excluded from the list of pending players. Pitcher Song Eun-beom, Lee Chan-hyuk, Kim Tae-hyung, Sung Jae-hyeon, Lim Jeong-woo, infielders Seo Geon-chang, Jeong Ju-hyeon, Kim Seong-hyeop, Choi Hyun-jun, and outfielders Lee Cheon-woong, Choi Min-chang, and Lee Cheol-min were notified of their release.

Last April, Lee Cheon-woong was investigated by the police on charges of illegal Internet gambling and was virtually in a situation where he could not make a comeback. In addition, Joo-Hyun Jeong, who was one of the ‘Edmonton Kids’ born in 1990, announced his retirement after 15 years of professional life.

Among the players released by LG, the player who attracts the most attention is definitely Seo Geon-chang. Seo Geon-chang was released after joining LG as a training player in 2008, but was given a chance to make a comeback at Nexen (now Kiwoom). In the end, Seo Geon-chang, who had barely continued his career since 2012, set a record of 200 hits for the first time in the KBO in 2014 and even won the MVP award. It was the point when the pearl in the dirt began to shine.

But the sparkle was short-lived. Afterwards, Seo Geon-chang's career gradually went downhill due to negative factors such as knee cruciate ligament injuries and shin injuries. In 2021, he made a firm determination for free agency, including cutting his salary ahead of free agency.

Here I reached a turning point in my career. Ahead of the trade deadline at the end of July, he was traded 1-for-1 with Chan-Heon Jeong. LG brought in Seo Geon-chang to solve the second baseman problem. Seo Geon-chang returned to the team that helped him enter the professional ranks and also gave him the bitter taste of being released.

However, while playing for Kiwoom and LG, Seo Geon-chang only had a batting average of .253 (130 hits in 513 at-bats), 6 home runs, 67 RBIs, 18 stolen bases, and an OPS of .693 in 144 games. Efforts were made to lower the FA rating through self-cutting, etc., but Seo Geon-chang was unable to achieve results commensurate with his efforts. He chose to retake FA. However, the results of his attempt were not good. He only played in 77 games in the 2022 season and had a batting average of .202, 49 hits (49 hits in 219 at-bats), 2 home runs, and 18 RBIs. Seo Geon-chang chose FA Samsu without any choice.

Ahead of the 2023 season, he reunited with coach Yeom Kyung-yeop, who discovered him and led him to the 200-hit record. With Coach Yeom newly appointed as head coach, Seo Geon-chang also seemed to have an opportunity to rebound again. Director Yeom Kyung-yeop also actively supported Seo Geon-chang's revival. In this year's exhibition game, Seo Geon-chang was outstanding with a batting average of .462 (17 hits in 47 at-bats), 4 RBIs, 4 stolen bases, and 5 runs. He raised expectations for the regular season by winning the batting title in the exhibition game.

However, there was no further rebound for Seo Geon-chang. The exhibition game was the high point of the year. Everyone was shaken in offense and defense. And in the meantime, Shin Min-jae took over as the starting second baseman. Seo Geon-chang played so well that his presence was not to be missed, and he did not give up his position until the end. In the end, Seo Geon-chang was unable to enjoy the joy even when the team won the regular season or the Korean Series. After being expunged from the first team on May 19th of the regular season, he was not called up until the expanded entry was implemented in September.

In 44 games during the regular season, he had a batting average of .200 (22 hits in 110 at-bats) with 12 hitters and an OPS of .542. Despite making three moves as a free agent, Seo Geon-chang was unable to rebound. Seo Geon-chang was already no longer LG’s power. In the end, Seo Geon-chang and LG ended their relationship by parting ways again after 2008.

The key is whether Seo Geon-chang can be given another chance to restore his honor. The release on this day also means that he was ignored in the second draft on the 22nd. It could be interpreted that no one saw Seo Geon-chang's potential for a rebound. However, when making a second draft selection, there is the burden of having to pay the transfer fee to the original team and completing the mandatory registration period for the first team.

Instead, if you recruit a released student without any restrictions, you can utilize it with relative ease. Will Seo Geon-chang be given another chance? The second release hurts just as much as the first release.
