The reason why rumors of Shohei Ohtani signing a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays have risen rapidly.

With Shohei Ohtani's decision on a new home imminent, a trip to the Toronto Blue Jays of the Eastern Division of the American League suddenly emerged on the 9th (Korean time). Of course, Toronto is one of the final candidates to recruit Ohtani, along with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Local time, MLB Network reporter John Morosi borrowed an anonymous source and posted on social media that Ohtani was headed to Toronto. The reporter who predicted that Otani would sign before the weekend was also Moroshi. However, Ohtani's agency, CAA, kept quiet about this.

An hour later, USA Today reporter Bob Nightingale reported that Ohtani was not in Toronto and had not boarded the plane. He tweeted that he is currently at home in Southern California.

It was confirmed that Toronto met Ohtani in Florida during the winter meeting on the 5th. Like the LA Dodgers, the meeting was not made public and was met quietly as Ohtani requested.

Toronto had rarely signed a major player in the free agent market before signing a four-year, $80 million contract with former Los Angeles Dodgers' Ryu Hyun-jin in December 2019. The salary was not high in a short period of time. Ryu Hyun-jin was the best free agent contract.

However, after Ryu Hyun-jin, it exceeded $100 million. In 2020, outfielder George Springer signed a six-year contract worth $150 million, the highest free agent contract in club history. In 2022, he signed right-hander Kevin Gausman to a five-year, $110 million contract. More than $100 million became the default. In early 2023, the starting rotation was strengthened with right-hander Chris Bassett on a three-year, $63 million contract.

Toronto's ownership is Rogers Communications, which covers mobile communications and cable TV in Canada. It is a mammoth publicly traded company with fiscal 2022 revenue of $1.68 billion.

The American media is encouraging Ohtani to move to the AL East. The United States is a strictly eastern-centered society. In reality, Western team superstars suffer losses compared to their performance. Seattle Mariners Ken Griffey Jr. is a representative example.

From Toronto's perspective, they also need to keep a check on the New York Yankees since they traded outfielder Juan Soto. If Yoshinobu Yamamoto joins, the AL East landscape will change again. Toronto advanced to the postseason three times in the four years that Ryu Hyun-jin joined in 2020, but failed to win the district championship. There has been no World Series since 1992 or 1993.

The time to decide whether Otani will find a new home in Toronto, Canada is approaching.
