Coach Cho Sang-hyun admits complete defeat, “My preparation was wrong”

“Before blaming the players, my preparation was wrong.”

Changwon LG held the 2023-2024 Jeong Kwan-Jang Professional Basketball Tournament held at Daegu Gymnasium on the 16th. In the away game, they suffered a painful loss to Daegu Korea Gas Corporation, 69-88. LG, which broke KOGAS' 7-game losing streak at home, recorded 15 wins and 6 losses, but maintained second place. However, the gap with 1st place Wonju DB widened to 2.5 games, and the gap with 3rd place Suwon KT decreased to 1.5 games.

Only Assem Marey (14 points, 17 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals) and Justin Goutang (14 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) scored in double figures.

At the beginning of the third quarter, LG was ahead 50-38 and seemed to be winning comfortably. However, I suddenly fell into a hunting situation. LG, who had even suffered a comeback, entered the fourth quarter with a 62-60 score.

LG hit three consecutive 3-point shots at the start of the fourth quarter. After Jung Hee-jae's free throw, they allowed 16 consecutive points. It was 64-85, a 21-point difference. The remaining time was 48 seconds in the second part. The game has been decided.

LG coach Cho Sang-hyun said after the game, “As you saw the game, it was a complete defeat. Before blaming the players, my preparation was wrong. There should have been a change in defense when hitting a 3-point shot. It is important to take responsibility for the results and recover quickly. “We have to prepare for the game tomorrow (17th),” he said. “It’s a complete loss.” Too many 3-point shots were hit from the direction I wanted, and more were hit from the direction I didn't want. “We were under pressure and did not create (attacking opportunities) in the pick game,” he said, putting the blame for the defeat on himself.

Jung Hee-jae was caught with 4 fouls with 4 minutes and 52 seconds left in the third quarter. Afterwards, LG conceded 8 consecutive goals, allowing the score to be tied at 55-55.

When asked whether Chung Hee-jae's foul trouble affected the flow of the game, coach Cho Sang-hyun said, "More than any influence, it was the 3-point defense. They should have scored after conceding a point shot, but the tough shot from the front didn't go in. “If that had gone in, it would have been a seesaw game,” he said. “You have to play cool-headed and dispose of the ball quickly. When things are going well, Marey also gives away the ball well in the middle, but today (16th) he gave up a dead ball. “There was no post attack,” he said, saying it was a defense problem.
