Bo Bichette Named 2023 Toronto Player of the Year

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bisset was selected as the most decorated player of the 2023 season.

On the 29th (Korean time), the Blue Jays team revealed the list of individual award winners selected by the Toronto branch of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA).

Bissett won the Neil McCaul Award for ‘Player of the Year’.


Bisset led Toronto's batting lineup by ranking third in batting average (0.306) and fourth in most hits (175) in the American League this season. He created 77 pushed hits, also leading the major leagues in this category.

He became the fourth player in Blue Jays history to hit 30 doubles and hit 20 home runs in three consecutive seasons.

Right-hander Kevin Gausman was selected as Pitcher of the Year.

Gausman ranked first in the American League this season in strikeouts (237), strikeout rate (31.3%), strikeouts per nine innings (11.53), and fWAR (5.3). The ERA of 3.16 is also the fourth lowest in the American League.

He was selected as an All-Star for the second time in his career, and finished third in the Cy Young Award voting.

Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi received the Most Improved Player award.

Kikuchi, who experienced the sorrow of being demoted to the bullpen last season, lowered his ERA, which soared to 5.19 in 2022, to 3.86 in the 2023 season, and succeeded in rebounding by lowering his walk rate from 12.8% to 6.9%.

Infielder Davis Schneider was named Rookie of the Year.

Schnider was called up in an away game against the Boston Red Sox on August 5 and stood out by hitting a home run in the first at-bat of his career. In his first 25 games, he posted a 1.315 OPS, his best mark in that category since 1901.

Meanwhile, third base coach Luis Rivera and Mike Shaw, the club's director of away travel and clubhouse operations, jointly received the John Cerruti Award, which is given to 'a person who demonstrates the values ​​of goodwill, cooperation, and character.'
