‘Big lineup’ is the ‘key’ to Hyundai Mobis’ escape from losing streak

Hyundai Mobis' big lineup was the key to escaping their losing streak.

Ulsan Hyundai Mobis won 77-69 in the first match of the 2023-2024 Jeong Kwan-Jang Professional Basketball season against Seoul Samsung held at Dongcheon Gymnasium in Ulsan on the 9th. Hyundai Mobis faced the negative news of Woo-Seok Lee's (injury) absence before the game, and an unexpected event occurred when Gage Prim left the court in the third quarter. Prim, who committed a T-foul early in the game, also accumulated a U-foul in the third quarter, was ejected, and left the court.

At the moment of crisis, Hyundai Mobis overcame the crisis with its big lineup shining in the game and achieved victory. Hyundai Mobis, breaking away from two consecutive losses, recorded its fifth win (three losses) and rose to second place.

Hyundai Mobis, who had repeatedly suffered from poor outside shooting and being inferior in the third quarter during the losing streak, smiled by bringing out a new weapon called a big lineup.

Before the game, coach Cho Dong-hyun announced the start of Choi Jin-soo (34, 203 cm) and predicted a big lineup. The intention was to use the tall Choi Jin-su as number 3 (small forward) and target the opponent's goal with a strategy of causing mismatch.

Accordingly, Coach Cho selected Jin-Soo Choi, Ji-Hoon Ham, and Gage Prim as the starters along with the backcourt of Tae-Wan Kim and Ji-Wan Kim.

As a result, this choice resulted in victory. Using their height advantage, they actively targeted Samsung's goal. Jihoon Ham (39, 198cm) took center stage with 18 points and 9 assists, while Prim and Kebe Aluma also combined for 29 points and 12 rebounds. Thanks to their performance, Hyundai Mobis also achieved air superiority (36-32).

While Ham Ji-hoon and the two foreign players focused on attack, Choi Jin-soo focused on defense. His defensive position on the outside as well as under the goal was appropriate. When Coburn attempted to post up from inside, two Hyundai Mobis defenders surrounded him. And Choi Jin-su's movement to enter the assist defense from about a foot away from the low post was smooth.

The moment when the true value of the big lineup shined was in the game. After finishing the 3rd quarter with the score tied (52-52), Hyundai Mobis took the lead by scoring 8 points at the start of the 4th quarter. At a time when a change of pace was needed, Hyundai Mobis' big lineup effectively blocked the opponent's attack.

After the game, coach Cho Dong-hyun also praised the team, saying, “The big men did a good job with the defense we had prepared.” At the same time, plans for a big lineup in the future were also revealed.

He said, “(Choi) Jin-soo showed good performance in the D-League as well. We plan to use big lineups that utilize Jinsu little by little (in the regular league). “Jinsu is good at solving problems in defense and height, so I plan to try using other big lineups as well,” he said.

Director Cho is also considering another type of big lineup in his mind. It seems possible to see a picture in which Aluma, who has shooting ability, is placed at small forward and domestic big men such as Jang Jae-seok and Kim Jun-il are used at the same time.

Hyundai Mobis' big lineup boasts a very solid team of big men. I think it will be a point to watch for future Hyundai Mobis games.
