A foreign hitter from the independent league who achieved the Korean dream of ‘seven-fold increase in annual salary’

Kiwoom Heroes Ronnie Dawson (28) successfully renewed his contract.

On the 11th, Kiwoom announced, “We signed a contract with foreign hitter Ronnie Dawson for the 2024 season for a total of $600,000 (approximately KRW 791.04 million), including an annual salary of $550,000 and incentives of $50,000.”

Dawson came to Kiwoom this year as a replacement foreign hitter for Edison Russell. Because he did not have much major league experience and was a player who played in an independent league, he was able to be brought in for the low price of $85,000 (about 100 million won). When he first came to Kiwoom, expectations were not that high, but he performed better than expected, recording a batting average of .336 (77 hits in 229 at-bats), 3 home runs, 29 RBIs, and an OPS of .852 in 57 games.

Kiwoom began negotiations early on to renew Dawson's contract. Negotiations took longer than expected, but an agreement was reached on a total of $600,000 (approximately 800 million won), seven times this year's annual salary, and Dawson will play for Kiwoom again next year.

Kiwoom's star, Lee Jeong-hoo, will enter the major league this winter. Lee Jeong-hoo, who recorded a batting average of .349 (193 hits in 553 at-bats), 23 home runs, 113 RBIs, and an OPS of .996 in 142 games last year, won five batting awards (batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, RBI, most hits) and was the league MVP this year. Although he was unable to play many games due to injury, he played an active part in 86 games with a batting average of .318 (105 hits in 330 at-bats), 6 home runs, 45 RBIs, and an OPS of .861. Lee Jeong-hoo's advance to the major leagues is a huge blow that Kiwoom cannot bear.

Kiwoom, which is letting go of Lee Jeong-hoo, has emerged as the biggest challenge to form its outfield lineup for next season. He succeeded in securing a spot in the outfield by re-signing Dawson.

There is a high possibility that Lee Joo-hyung, who was acquired through a trade this year, will take over the other outfield spot. Joohyung Lee showed off his potential this year, recording a batting average of .326 (70 hits in 215 at-bats), 6 home runs, 36 RBIs, and an OPS of .897 in 69 games. His weakness is that he does not have full-time experience yet, but if he performs the same way next year as he did this year, he will be able to fill the void left by Lee Jeong-hoo.
